Demonstrators affiliated with the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been blocking a key highway in the eastern province of Muş for two days, burned and destroyed a large number of cars belonging to civilians on Friday.
The PKK has been blocking the Varto-Karlıova highway in Muş for two days. On Friday, a group protesting the removal of a statue of PKK founder Mahsum Korkmaz in Diyarbakır burned an oil tanker and two cars belonging to civilians and destroyed a large number of cars in Muş. Security forces tried to disperse the crowd by firing tear gas canisters and water cannon but were met with firecrackers and stones from the group.
The demonstrators then blocked the entrance to the Varto district and attempted to set fire to the Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) district office by throwing Molotov cocktails. Firefighters prevented a fire from breaking out.
Though the Varto-Karlıova highway was opened to traffic by special forces units and gendarmes early on Friday morning, it was blocked by the PKK once again later in the day. The many destroyed cars in line along the blocked highway gave the appearance of a multiple-vehicle collision.
